Pedophiles <3 NY

Pedophiles <3 NY

By Melanie Blow

Dear Tourism commissioner,

Child sexual abuse is very costly. New York spends billions of dollars every year on the increased health care, legal expenses, educational expenses, etc,. that go along with it. Year after year, we continue to extend policies that make New York a pedophile-friendly state, especially compared to neighboring states like NJ, PA and VT. New York relies on a healthy economy, and we can partially offset the costs of child sexual abuse by encouraging pedophiles to move to New York, incorporate businesses, and pay taxes.

Creative Brief- Bob is a 38-year-old junior high administrator in Vermont. He has an eleven-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old daughter, and he has sexually abused both of them. The oldest girl brings friends over to the house for sleep-over’s, and he has sexually abused some of them. He fastidiously follows the school’s policy about not socializing with students outside of school, but he gets around this by coaching girls’ sports in a neighboring district. His wife is a paralegal, and between the two of them they make $130K/year. Bob hates Jerry Sandusky as much as the rest of us do, but he believes what he does is very different. His daughters still love him, their friends keep coming over to his house, and the girls he coaches stay with him year after year. He is quite sure he won’t ever get into trouble with the law, but every once in a while he worries about it, especially when someone else in his town gets arrested for sexually abusing a child.

We want Bob to move to New York. Bob probably doesn’t know it takes survivors an average of over 21 years before they can talk about their abuse. Since New York’s SOL is a victim’s 23rd birthday, there is an excellent chance he will escape all legal consequences for his abuse. Of course, we cannot guarantee that, and anything we say to that effect needs to be cleared through our legal department, but Bob would rather live in a state where he’s unlikely to be prosecuted than to live in a state where he’s likely to be prosecuted. He doesn’t want to think about losing his house, pension and his daughters’ college fund. And we’d rather he pays taxes and spends money in NY than in Vermont.

New York is committed to remaining a pedophile-friendly state, as evidenced by the fact that we refuse to reform the state’s Statute of Limitations for child sexual abuse. This means that between 90-97% of people who sexually abuse a child escape conviction, so background checks, Megan’s Law and miscellaneous registries are basically useless. We also want to encourage sex offenders to incorporate businesses involving children in NY, because NY businesses enjoy protection from civil liability similar to what child rapists do. Again, nothing short of arresting a sex offender and holding them accountable for their crime will stop them from sexually abusing children. They want to work with children, and some will want to establish businesses working with children. We might as well capitalize on this- if we don’t, another state will.

An added bonus of this demographic is that they have no incentive to cross state lines and spend money elsewhere- the papers are full of headlines about pedophiles vacationing in states with oppressive SOL’s, committing a sex crime and getting convicted.

This promotional campaign may sound callous, but let me be clear about one thing- there are plenty of Bob’s already in New York. I’d rather they weren’t here. Morally, it’s no worse to sexually abuse a child in one state than another. And since they’re going to sexually abuse children anyway, and since New York steadfastly refuses to change its pedophile-friendly laws, we might as well collect taxes from these people. That way there is more money to pay for the health care, psychotherapy, drug rehabilitation, prisons etc., that their victims need.

I’m asking you to sell the idea that New York loves pedophiles to pedophiles. I’m not asking you to make New York into a pedophile-friendly state. Our elected officials have been doing that for the last nine years.

If you have an promotional idea for this campaign, please send it to [email protected]. And if you’d prefer to solve the problem of sexually abused children and costing NY money by keeping children from being sexually abused, you can sign this petition.
