HOLLYWOOD, Ala. (AP) — Broke and pregnant after a childhood her grandmother describes as a nightmare, police say 19-year-old Mekenzie Leigh Guffey sought help from the place that many young mothers-to-be turn to in Alabama’s rural, northeastern corner: A social worker.

That decision helped land her in jail on charges of having sex with a 14-year-old boy. She’s accused of rape and other offenses.

Police Chief Jason Hepler said he got wind of an illicit relationship between the two from the Alabama Department of Human Resources, which was notified after Guffey sought assistance through a Medicaid program that assists area women. Guffey was jailed within days.

Living through a rough childhood doesn’t make up for having sex with a juvenile, Hepler said, and the young woman showed little sign of shame.

Anne Levey is racked with guilt.

Once a devout Catholic, Ms Levey still has faith in God — but she can’t bring herself to step inside a Catholic Church.

She doesn’t accept dogma from any church, not since her son Paul was sexually abused at the hands of disgraced paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale.

“I blame myself, every day I blame myself,” she says. “I can’t help it.

“You go to bed and you’re thinking about it. You wake up and you’re thinking about it, but you just have to keep going. You live with it every day, the guilt, regret and the shame.”

Ms Levey is one of scores of secondary victims of the child sexual abuse scandal caught up in a cycle of entrenched pain.

Pastor Charged in Child’s Death

READING, Pa. (AP) — A pastor in a fundamentalist Christian sect that rejects doctors and drugs has been charged in the death of a child — his own granddaughter — from medical neglect. The novel prosecution is raising hopes among some advocates that it might spur change in a church that has resisted it.

Faith Tabernacle Congregation has long told adherents to place their trust in God alone for healing. As a result, dozens of children, mostly in Pennsylvania, have died of preventable and treatable illnesses. Church members reject modern medicine as a bedrock tenet of their faith, even as some have faced manslaughter charges in child deaths dating back 35 years.

Until now, though, no leader in the sect has ever faced charges.

“It could be a new tool to save the lives of these children,” said Rita Swan, one of the nation’s top experts on faith-based medical neglect. She leads the group Children’s Healthcare is a Legal Duty, which works to eliminate religious exemptions in state laws requiring parents to provide appropriate medical care.

It was October 2012. I had been invited to give a lecture on secondhand drinking (the negative impacts of a person’s drinking behaviors on others) to Stanford Medical School students enrolled in Dr. Stanley Fischman’s Eating Disorders and Addiction Rotation.

Dr. Fischman asked me to speak with his rotation students on a regular basis given my decades experience with loved ones’ alcohol misuse, my own eating disorders, and my relevant work experience. He wanted his students to understand the other side of a person’s alcohol misuse – secondhand drinking (SHD) – because it affects 90 million Americans. That’s five times the number of people whose drinking causes SHD, yet medical practices are primarily focused on the drinker and the health impacts the drinker experiences.

During my lecture, I explained drinking behaviors, which are at the root of SHD. Drinking behaviors occur when a person consumes more alcohol, thus more ethyl alcohol chemicals, than their liver can metabolize. When this happens, the ethyl alcohol chemicals interrupt the chemical portion of the brain’s cell-to-cell communications. This suppresses normal neural network functioning responsible for judgment, memory, pleasure/reward, emotions, breathing…. In other words, it changes a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

At first, the photographs seem unremarkable—a pair of well-worn shoes, a flannel shirt, gray sweatpants.

Floating on a black background, hung on a clean white wall, these 12 photographs show what 12 rape victims wore at the time of their assault.

The series, titled “Well, What Were You Wearing?” by Katherine Cambareri, offers a simple yet poignant look into the realities of rape.

Washington, D.C. — A total of 501 juveniles have been reported missing in D.C. since the beginning of the year. This startling number has forced the hands of several officials who’ve written a letter to call on special help from the Justice Department in investigating the matter.

The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, asked FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to “devote the resources necessary to determine whether these developments are an anomaly or whether they are indicative of an underlying trend that must be addressed.” It was signed by Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents D.C. in Congress.

“Ten children of color went missing in our nation’s capital in a period of two weeks and at first garnered very little media attention. That’s deeply disturbing,” Richmond’s letter said.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Since she was 14, Tiffany says, she has been sold for sex, offered via hundreds of advertisements on Backpage.com, a website that grew rich on classified ads for services like escorts, body rubs and exotic dancers. Far from being a marketplace for consensual exchanges, Backpage, the authorities said, often used teasers like “Amber Alert” and “Lolita” to signal that children were for sale.

In the midst of a Senate investigation, a federal grand jury inquiry in Arizona, two federal lawsuits and criminal charges in California accusing Backpage’s operators of pimping children, the website abruptly bowed to pressure in January and replaced its sex ads with the word “Censored” in red.

Even so, Tiffany — a street name — did not stop using the site, she said. Instead, her ads moved to Backpage’s dating section. “New in town,” read a recent one, using words that have become code for selling sex. “Looking for someone to hang out with.” Other recent dating ads listed one female as “100% young” and suggested that “oh daddy can i be your candy.”

Devon parents are being taught how to spot the signs their children could be being targeted by adults intent on using them for sex in a new campaign running across the county

Police, councils and charities are working together to educate parents about the signs of child sexual exploitation.

A webpage has been launched at www.dc.police.uk/cseawareness to highlight all the support and services available in the county for parents who fear their children could be in danger.

Child sexual exploitation involves young people and children being ‘groomed’ and sexually exploited. It can take many forms, such as through an apparently ‘consensual’ relationship with an older person or a young person having sex in return for attention, gifts, cigarettes or alcohol.

Many young people who are being exploited do not realise they are at risk and will not ask for help. Some may see themselves as willing participants in such abuse, not realising that what is happening to them is illegal.

Former U.S. rhythmic gymnast Jessica Howard is fighting to end what she calls “crippling” abuse plaguing USA Gymnastics, which she said she experienced nearly 18 years ago.

In an essay for The New York Times published Wednesday, Howard, the U.S. champion of rhythmic gymnastics from 1999 to 2001, railed against the sport’s national governing body for not doing enough to protect athletes.

“The institutional tolerance of abusive training and the penchant of USA Gymnastics to look away create a culture conducive to sexual abuse ― for gymnasts of all skill levels,” Howard wrote.

Howard, a Florida native, alleged she was 15 when the national team’s doctor, Larry Nassar, sexually abused her. She said she met Nassar in 1999 at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas while seeking treatment for hip pain brought on by grueling training prior to the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship. Nassar abused her several times during her week-long stay at the facility, Howard wrote.

A legal counsel for the Archdiocese of Agana intends to argue for the dismissal of the 25 child sex abuse cases currently sitting in the U.S. District Court of Guam by challenging the legality of the law which lifted the statute of limitations on civil action for child sex abuse.

Public Law 33-187, formerly Bill 326-33, was signed into law in September 2016 and opened the door for civil action against perpetrators of child sex abuse.

Documents filed in federal court Friday indicate that the archdiocese’s counsel, Attorney John Terlaje, will file a motion to dismiss all 25 cases and intends to challenge the legality of the law, which permitted the suits to be filed in the first place.

Former Sen. Frank Blas Jr., who co-sponsored the original legislation that lifted the statute of limitations, told The Guam Daily Post he was not concerned about the challenge and believed the law would pass muster in court.

STAMFORD — Elizabeth Spalter lives far from the “house of terror” her brother described in court.

But she says the years of her father’s sexual abuse at the family’s summer home on Van Rensselear Avenue in Shippan helped shape her career as a social worker in Vienna, Austria.

A jury on Friday awarded Spalter $20 million — possibly the state’s largest civil award in a child sexual abuse case — from her dead father’s estate following a monthlong trial at the Stamford courthouse.

“I have tried to dedicate my life to protecting and healing children through my work and the jury with their verdict has helped to protect many other children and help other victims come forward,” Spalter said.

The victim of sexual abuse by Samantha Werkheiser was “the most vulnerable amongst us,” a judge said Friday in sentencing the former Binghamton dance teacher to 15 years in state prison.

Although Werkheiser, twice convicted of abusing a child who was 6 years old, adamantly maintained that she was innocent and the subject of a “witch hunt,” Broome County Court Judge Joseph Cawley said he was “absolutely confident” she was guilty of the crime: a felony charge of first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child.

“The harm that you have done … is a torment no one, least of all a child, should have to go through,” Cawley told Werkheiser, 37, who will additionally spend 20 years on supervised release following the prison term. She will also have to register as a sex offender.
